Back to the Wild - Update

lone on release

Lone overseeing preparations at the previous release site in Autumn 2009 when you helped return 46 wild Orangutans to the rainforest.

News of the best kind has hit the press this week. News we love to share with our donors, you play so vital a part in making these events happen.

Some of the apes fortunate enough to find sanctuary in the care of Borneo Orangutan Survival will likely make a return to their original habitats soon. The Indonesian government has pledged to issue a new permit to convert production forests in an effort to help save the Orangutan from extinction, and meet the country’s target of releasing all rehabilitated Orangutans to their habitat by 2015.

The permit, due to be issued later this month, will be the first permit granted for Orangutan habitats in the last eight years and it will be issued to BOS Foundation! Covering some 86,000 hectares of rainforest in Kutai, East Kalimantan, it could potentially be the new rainforest home of 127 Orangutans.

There are now 1,200 Orangutans held in rehabilitation centres both in Kalimantan and Sumatra, many of these rescued and cared for by the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation.

No rehabilitated Orangutans - our orphaned apes that have been through Forest School and graduated from Orangutan University - have been released in the last eight years due to difficulty finding suitable forest area that could be effectively protected from deforestation and potential development of oil-palm plantations.

BOSF plans to return healthy orangutans ready for release later this year to the Kutai region. One hundred hectares of forest is needed for every three orangutans.

Adhering to the advice of Orangutan experts such as University of Zurich's Carel van Schaik, BOS will continue to carefully prepare for the release of these and subsequent groups of Orangutans into the wild.

And when that moment finally arrives, it will be a momentous occasion, and know that you, our supporters and donors, have played a crucial part in giving them back their Freedom.
